QUESTIONS I ACTUALLY GET ASKED.

Real answers from my collection, not textbook advice.

What are your growing conditions?

I keep my collection at around 70-75 degrees with 70-75% humidity. That range works well for both anthuriums and alocasias and is consistent enough that I don't have to think about it much once the setup is dialed in.

How often do you water?

Honestly, this is why I switched to semi-hydro. I love my plants too much and I was overwatering everything. Semi-hydro took that variable away from me. Most of my anthuriums are in a self-watering setup so the plant takes what it needs when it needs it. For substrate specifics, I wrote a full post on what I use and why. You can read that here.

How long do you run your grow lights?

12 hours on, 12 hours off. Consistent light schedule matters more than the exact number of hours. Pick a schedule and stick to it.

Care & Growing Conditions

What substrate do you use?

It depends on the plant. For most anthuriums, I use a chunky aroid mix I make myself. Seedlings get a modified version of that. Alocasias go into stratum and perlite, and larger alocasias go into pon. I wrote a full breakdown of every mix with ingredients and reasoning. It's one of my most useful posts.

How do you manage pests?

I use beneficial insects rather than chemical sprays. Specifically, I run Californicus and Cucumeris sachets throughout my collection and replace them every 6 to 8 weeks. I also use one lacewing card spread across the collection. Right now, I'm in prevention and maintenance mode, so this routine handles it. A full infestation would call for a different approach.

I buy my beneficials from DMV Beneficials and recommend them without hesitation.

Pest Management

How do you quarantine new plants?

Every new plant gets treated before it goes anywhere near my collection. I treat with Jacks Dead Bug Brew first, then the plant goes into either a tote or a gallon zip-lock bag for at least 4 weeks. During that time I check every couple of days to make sure it has enough water and I use a scope to check for bugs. No exceptions.

Do you have an online store?

Not yet. I run themed live auctions on Palmstreet and purges on Facebook. Prices are beginner-friendly and I always have entry-level options available.

Buying & Drops

Do you ship or do local pickup only?

I offer both. Local pickup is available in Lexington, SC. I also ship via UPS.

I'm new to anthuriums. Where do I begin?

Start with my beginner guide. It covers substrate, light, humidity, and watering, which are the four things that actually matter for your first anthurium. Don't overcomplicate it early on.

Getting Started

What's an alocasia corm and can a beginner grow one?

Yes, and they're one of the best entry points into the hobby. Affordable, forgiving, and a great way to learn without a big investment. I have a full post on this.
